When Should You Consider Dental Implants? All The Facts

Dentistry has advanced quickly over the years, and there are now fixes for many common issues. Unsurprisingly, many of us are self-conscious about our teeth, especially when some are missing. Fortunately, dental implants are a long-term solution to this, and are so skilfully done that it can be impossible to tell which is a real tooth and which is artificial.

How do they work?

A dental implant is usually made of titanium and has an internal screw that holds a false tooth (or teeth) in place. After the implant has been fitted in place of a tooth’s root, the surrounding bone grows to hold it securely. An implant can support several teeth or dentures, meaning you do not need one per missing tooth.

Who should get dental implants?

Dental implants are suitable for most adults who are in good general health and have healthy gums. However, they cannot be used on children under 18 due to the fact they are still growing. You may not be able to have implants if you are a smoker, have had radiotherapy in your jaw, or have gum disease.

What’s the process?

The process of getting dental implants can vary from person to person, but generally it involves three key steps:

1) The placement of the implant into your jaw and the attachment of the abutment. This is a one or two stage process.

2) The fusion of your implant with the surrounding bone. This can take six weeks to six months, and you may be offered false teeth to wear during this period.

3) The construction and fitting of your new artificial teeth.

If you’re self-conscious of the gaps in your teeth and would like to see your smile restored to its full glory, then dental implants may be the solution for you.
