Types of Hair Transplant Explained

Hair loss affects most people at some point in their lives. Common balding is known as androgenetic alopecia, and it occurs as a result of testosterone metabolites impacting genetically susceptible hair follicles. It can also be an autoimmune response, or it can be caused by anaemia, thyroid disease, protein deficiency, chemotherapy and a lack of certain vitamins. Hair transplants are becoming an increasingly popular choice to counteract hair loss, and modern techniques are extremely effective.

There are two main types:

FUE hair transplant

This is the gold standard procedure. It involves the removal of individual follicles from the donor area of the scalp, using a special cutting tool. These follicles are then inserted into tiny cuts in the recipient site, where they subsequently bed down. A skilled surgeon will ensure these new placements match the natural angle of your hair, and the follicles should go on to grow healthy hairs where you were previously bald.

FUT hair transplant

In FUT surgery, the surgeon cuts away a strip of hair follicles from the donor site. This strip is then divided up into individual follicles or small clusters, which are then inserted into the recipient area. This technique is sometimes called ‘strip harvesting’.

However, if hair transplant isn’t right for you, we recommend getting a hair implant procedure instead. This involves implanting high quality synthetic hairs into the scalp. It feels completely natural, and eliminates the need for harvesting hair from other regions. The procedure is suitable for hair thickening, hair regrowth and combating baldness.

Frequently asked questions about hair transplant:

How long does the procedure take?

It depends, but usually around 4-6 hours, sometimes longer for more complex procedures.

When will I see results?

Again, it depends, but some people begin seeing results within 4-6 months after surgery. Expect it to take up to a year, depending on various factors.

Is it permanent?

It can be, but not always. But you can expect the results to be long-lasting.

Who’s a suitable candidate?

People with minimal contrast between hair and skin colour. People with thicker hair, particularly if it is naturally wavy or curly. People with a loose scalp. And people without scalp disease like Alopecia.

How do I choose a hair transplant surgeon/clinic?

Look for clinics that offer a consultation before treatment. Ensure they offer the treatment you need, and that the physician is experienced. Clinics that specialise in certain treatments are good candidates, and you can gain trust in clinics that show before and after photos.
