Laser hair removal: is it permanent?

A popular treatment for effective, long-lasting hair removal, Laser Hair Removal involves the use of a fine beam laser light which is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle. The light converts to heat, damaging the hair follicle so that the hair falls out. Laser Hair Removal is a safe and well-sought out procedure. However, the main question for many people is: how long will the results last? We answer this question here, as well as giving you information on the various types of laser treatments out there.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

No. The hair will grow back, but it will be thinner than previously. In many cases, the regrowth is so minimal that there’s no need to shave or use other forms of hair control, as the fresh hairs are virtually unnoticeable.

Different lasers tend to give similar results

We use two different types of laser at our clinic: the Alexandrite laser; and the Long Pulse Nd: YAG laser. The Alexandrite is the speediest out of the two types and is generally used for lighter or olive skinned individuals. Ideal for removing fine hair, it can cover large areas quickly. In comparison, the Long Pulse is slightly slower, but works well on darker skin. Both achieve the same result: the removal of hair. Normally the hair falls out within five to fourteen days, depending on the stage of growth.

Regardless of the type of laser used, where it is used or individual variations, hair normally takes several months to grow back: far longer than other forms of hair removal treatment. When it does grow back, it’s less noticeable.

Several sessions are usually required, in order to ensure that as many hairs as possible are caught at the right stage of their growth cycle for the removal to be effective. Normally four to six treatments are needed to achieve sufficient hair loss.

To date, laser treatment is the most effective method on the market when it comes to achieving long-term results.
